About us

Duijvestijn Tomaten

For more than sixty years, Duijvestijn Tomaten has been growing high quality, delicious tomatoes with passion and pride. Sustainability and innovation have always been key motivational factors and are intrinsic elements of how we operate. Over the years, our focus has increasingly shifted to specialise in sustainable production and the development of new (tomato) products and healthy food concepts. We have evolved to rank among the most innovative and sustainable tomato growers in the world and take a pioneering role in the development of new, sustainable ways of growing, grading and packing crops. Our ambition is to ultimately make all our processes circular.

At our two locations in Pijnacker, we currently grow on nearly 25 hectares and produce about 17 million kilos of tomatoes every year. We operate with great respect for people and the environment. Our dedicated team grows, cares for, harvests, grades and packs various varieties of tomatoes. Our focus is on quality and flavour. So we can harvest the very best tomatoes every year, they are picked by hand and subjected to a series of strict quality inspections.

Our tomatoes are supplied to supermarkets, foodservice companies, wholesalers and specialist shops in the Netherlands and beyond.

Best Tomato Grower in the World

In 2015, we were awarded the title of the Best Tomato Grower in the World, among other things in recognition of our efforts in the field of geothermal energy and the development of a completely new energy-saving greenhouse concept: the ID kas®.

Our activities are no longer limited to just growing tomatoes, we also produce oven-dried tomatoes and new healthy food concepts.almost

History

1963

Foundation

Father Leo Duijvestijn started a small nursery, with 15,700 m 2 under glass, in Honselersdijk where he grew tomatoes. His sons Ted, Peter, Ronald and Remco mastered the fine art of horticulture here.

1963

1988

Acquisition

Ted, Peter and Ronald Duijvestijn acquired the nursery from their father and renamed the company Gebroeders Duijvestijn Tomaten.

1988

1997

Expansion

Expansion soon became a necessity, so the brothers decided to build a new greenhouse complex on Middenweg in Wateringen, covering an area of
45,000 m 2. In the same year, brother Remco also joined the company.

1997

2001

Foundation LogiFour

To enable flexible and efficient deliveries to our customers, we founded LogiFour. A brand new packaging and distribution centre where we can grade and pack tomatoes under our own management and pack tomatoes in any desired packaging (large or consumer units) for third parties.

2001

2004

Relocation to Pijnacker

The growing demand for high quality tomatoes led to a second expansion and signalled the construction of a new and innovative greenhouse complex at our current location in Pijnacker.

2004

2011

Start geothermal energy project

To reduce our energy consumption, as one of the first growers in the Netherlands, we decided to heat our greenhouses using geothermal energy. As a result, we use virtually no fossil fuels.

2011

2012

Development of biobased packaging and new name

We increasingly specialised in sustainable production and committed to utilising our waste streams. This philosophy inspired us to develop new packaging based on tomato stems. The old name Gebroeders Duijvestijn no longer reflected our new purpose. In the same year we changed the name to Duijvestijn Tomaten.

2012

2013

Development sustainable drying oven and introduction Frezta®

To reduce waste even more, we developed a special oven that dries surplus production straight from the greenhouse to create dried tomatoes and tapenades. Our new brand Frezta® was born. Geothermal energy provides the heat for this oven.

2013

2014

Realisation of the ID Kas®

We designed a completely new and revolutionary greenhouse concept, the ID kas®, for the development of new tomato varieties and energy saving cultivation methods. This new greenhouse represents substantial energy savings. In the same year it was voted Overall Winner of the GreenTech Awards, an important international environmental award.

2014

2015

Best Tomato Grower in the World award

In recognition of the creation of the ID Kas® and partly thanks to our efforts in the field of geothermal energy, we were voted the Best Tomato Grower in the World in 2015 at the Tomato Inspiration Event in Berlin.

2015

2016

Ad van Adrichem becomes Managing Director

To sharpen the focus on the commercial activities in the ever-expanding company, Ad van Adrichem was appointed Managing Director to oversee the day-to-day management.

2016

2018

Start Vertical Farming project

Our ongoing search for new possibilities and innovations resulted in the start of the vertical farming project. This project involves researching different crops and growing methods.

2018

2019

Expansion LogiFour and completion new Komkommerweg

The rising demand from third parties for packed tomatoes prompted an expansion of the LogiFour activities. In the middle of the year, the Komkommerweg road that runs past our company was completed so – on paper at least – we had a change of address from Overgauwseweg to Komkommerweg.

2019

2020

Expansion and introduction new logo

We are now more than just tomato growers. We are an innovative and enterprising company that produces healthy food in a sustainable way. In 2020 we will further expand our ambitions. A brand-new greenhouse complex covering 10 hectares will be built opposite our current location on Komkommerweg. The new complex will also use grow lights so we can grow year-round. This will almost double our current cultivation, future-proofing our company. A new, strong, contemporary and fresh logo has been chosen to reflect this ambition. The logo features the name Duijvestijn and the new slogan: next generation growers.

2020

2023

Duijvestijn Tomaten becomes part of The Flavour Farm

The incorporation of Duijvestijn Tomaten within The Flavour Farm will enable us to realise our further (international) growth and sustainable ambitions. It is the first step in building a European network of high-quality cultivation locations based on our company’s sustainable model.

2023

“We believe that if our tomatoes are grown with respect for people and the planet, they also taste better.”

Mission and core values

What we consider important

Since the foundation of our company in 1963, we have never stopped innovating: to improve our varieties and processes, increase our operational sustainability and reduce waste.

We use opportunities to innovate to make ourselves better, to ensure the ultimate in full-service for our customers and to make the world a little better.

Our mission:
To grow flavoursome, high quality foods that contribute to consumer health using the most innovative cultivation methods and produced and packed with a minimum impact on the environment.

We believe that if our tomatoes are grown with respect for people and the planet, they also taste better.

We are committed to maximum deployment of biological crop protection by maintaining the natural ecosystem in the greenhouse and we are rapidly moving towards our goal of complete circularity in our processes. This demands a new way of thinking about our management practice and our product.

We are the next generation growers!

Our core values

We have translated our history, identity and mission into six core values. These are the fundamental guiding principles of our company and demonstrate what we stand for and the image we want to convey through all our actions.

Joy

Growing tomatoes is in our genes and we have done this with immense passion for years. We want that pride and joy to shine and be shared with everyone we work with and for. We believe that happy people are more committed, proactive, loyal, enthusiastic and successful. Joy leads to a good product.

Innovative

We are at the forefront of the development of new systems and new ways to grow, grade and pack our crops. Sustainability, quality and efficiency are the foundation of our innovative efforts. We strive to continuously improve our processes.

Social engagement

We are aware of the impact that our actions of today have on the world of tomorrow. We aim to reduce our negative impact (by making it more sustainable), and also to increase our positive impact. We express our engagement through regular participation in social projects and contributing to the development and availability of healthy food for all.

Sustainable

The sustainability of our processes, products and services is one of our most important growth factors. Working towards complete circularity in our process (maximising use of waste, efficient use of resources, recycling and social innovation) is a key focus area.

Customer-centric

Powered by our immense professional knowledge and years of experience, we commit 100% every day to providing our customers and partners with the best full-service experience. We contribute proactively and are only satisfied if the customer’s expectations have been exceeded, both in terms of our service levels and our products.

Entrepreneurship

We interpret entrepreneurship as recognising opportunities and leveraging opportunities to create added value for our environment and for ourselves. We have the ability to adapt where necessary and are not afraid of embracing risk. We believe that everyone has the ability to sense opportunities, take the initiative, bring out their best and succeed.

Certification

Quality is paramount at Duijvestijn Tomaten and LogiFour, as is sustainability and good employership. To safeguard these principles, we have been awarded various certification, which is audited each year. This offers our customers the assurance that we comply with the strictest standards in terms of food safety, traceability, the environment, working conditions, safety and hygiene.
